Whats the general consensus with regard to fitting back boxes to dab and dob walls.
Is there anything anywhere that says you can (or cannot) fit a plastic plasterboard back box to a dab and dob wall?
I hate metal back boxes!!!

It depends on the construction, if you are first fixing to bare brick, metal boxes can be set and you cables coiled inside away from the boarder. When the wall is finished go back and 2nd fix to a solid box.
If you are trying to cut out fast fix boxes, you run the risk of hitting the dot and dab adhesive.

I hate dot and dab walls as I think its just lazy builders who get the apprentices to do that, and I end up having to use a wall chaser then go back and find the channel to cut through the gyproc and the glue/plaster mix to get to it as they fire it up before I get conduit in there......I'm afraid the only way is with metal back boxes.....there might be shallow ones available to make it a bit easier but I think you will be stuck with metal....

Can be a real pain in the backside. In my own living room, the metal backboxes are 25mm deep and the plasterboard is stuck on the wall around 40cm from the brickwork, leaving a gap between the box and socket/switch. Hardly forming an enclosure. Meaning to correct it........one day!

Mmmm Its me thats doing the dotting and dabbing!
Why will I be stuck with metal?

you can use whichever you want then. i hate dab and bodge coz you need longer screws for fixing anything and they cost more

Thanks question answered.
I don't really see what the problem is with dot and dab, I have a wall that was an exterior wall that is now part of a kitchen extension that is pebble dashed, dot and dab is cheaper than getting a wall rendered and plastered andddddd less messy! Love or hate its my choice.

shouldnt really your standard back box is 25mm Adhesive when pressed on properly should be around 12.5mm and the board is 12.mm so when skimmed should be about the same just skimming over the front of the back box ,if this is not the case for an un even wall use a deeper back box

Where possible I first fix just the cable. Then sink the box at second fix so that I know how much (if any) to chop into the brick or block.

Use whatever you like mate, I dot and dabbed my own house for the reasons listed, My mate said there would be less chance of cracking then with render, plaster etc.
