Went to price a job last week anyway, long story short I decided that I wasn't interested as it was a nause of a job and I'm busy enough at the moment anyway.

Today I received a call asking if I can pop over in the next couple of days to see why all the electrics are tripping out :D

The work being carried out was in a small kitchen and required a cooker isolator to be moved and something done with the electrics behind a double socket blank plate. Sounds like the person doing the work has removed the blank and just plastered straight over:38:

It'll be interesting to see what they have done with the cooker isolator as from what I could see it cannot go anywhere AND comply. It's currently positioned above where the hob is being fitted (existing cooker position) but there isn't 300mm to the left because of fridge freezer unit and not 300 to the right because of the edge of the sink, No cupboard unit for it to go in, anywhere else and it's WAY outside of 2 metres from the appliance???

Genuinely nice young lady but wanted the work completed before Tomorrow, I could have probably worked something out to juggle the diary but I just fancied this job was going to be too much aggro for little reward and may end up annoying another client.

I'll try to get some pictures of what I find:thumbsup

It is good practice to have any switch or socket at least 300mm from a sink or hob, but the way I understand it, it is not required. As long as the cooker switch is not directly over the hob then no rules are being broken. Correct me if I am wrong.

You're gonna absolutely LOVE these photo's. They managed to overcome the 300mm/2 metre issue ;)

Erm, isn't the switch still technically "above" the hob? .....

The pictures have not posted in the order I would have liked:(

There are two pictures that I took on my first visit that show the cooker isolator being directly above the hob and a blank over an old double socket. These have since been removed and plastered over.

If you look carefully at two of the other pictures (picture 1 and picture 6) you will see that the cooker isolator has now been placed behind the oven below the height of the work top. Completely inaccessible!

The client asked if I thought they should be reported... can you guess what my answer was? ;)

yes report them, ooooh they will be in loads of miether......(ridiculous isnt it this whole part p/kitchen fitter/Electrical Trainee approved scope thing, of course I'm not saying they are any of the above)

Whilst nothing will probably happen... if these issues go unreported then things will never get done. Part P may not be working as intended but it's a step in the right direction. I will continue paying my registration fees and continue being assessed even if it is just to separate my name from any of the cowboy names. I can't see it ever being scrapped as it would be a backwards step but with some much needed fine tuning things will perhaps get better... One Day ;)
