Hi guys what is the difference between an electronic ballast and a standard ballast

A standard ballast has a coil of wire (sometimes 2 coils) around a ferrous core, an electronic ballast uses solid state components to do the same job, they're very similar in design to a phone charger or laptop power supply but use modulation in the output stage to supply the lamp with high frequency power.

Electronic ballasts have many advantages, they're; cooler running, quieter, more efficient, lighter, cheaper, less prone to lamp flicker, self starting and less likely to cause a fire when the lamp fails.

Inductive ballasts have a few advantages, they're less sensitive to surges, possibly more robust and older electricians like them because it's what they grew up with.
