baz up north

hello all, having a little trouble. i went to look at a job at a farm this week, and the farmer wants some lights in his barn. he doesnt want the whole thing lit up, just certain areas. there is a 3-phase feed to the barn with only a single phase 16A radial socket circuit at the moment.

i was thinking of some sodium Flood lights, probably of only 70W each x 12off. and also mabey 4 x 250W sodium lights. with 3 light switches.

thats a total output 1840W.

is there anything i should know about sodium lights?
should the lights be wired on seperate circuitts?
what cable should be used within a barn?

if you have any information i require could you please help.

thanks

First question is what is the barn going to be used for before you start saying what luminaires you use, he may want a white light and not orange light as from SON fittings.

the lights are only being used to light the barn up. not for any specific type of work. the barn is used to keep the cows and store the hay. nothing else happens in there so im told. he is not bothered about the colour of the light, just wants to be able to see.

thanks for the replies so far.

He may not be bothered about couler of light but he may need to check what it will do with his cows e.g. not give milk

the cows are being reared for meat, so lighting is not a problem.

i am after some guidence on the best way to wire these lights up for the amount of them.

the lights will only be on while the farmer is in the barn. the lighting is not for the cows at night.

what about some of these low energy lights? no high start up currents, no problems turning on and off repeatedly as there could be with discharge lighting and no cantactors needed. also wouldn't you need rcd protection for animals?

Hi there.

Worth checking out section 705 in the regs. It covers agricultural premesis, RCD protection is a must for all circuits... and theres one or two other interesting regs in there too.:)

Hi, thanks but I have the BRB and hae red section 705. Just needed some help with the circuit.

Has anybody fitted low watt floodlights like these for instance

Energy Saving Floodlight 2 x 26w

what is the light like? Colour/etc

& I lf
I did use low energy low watt lights could this be run of one mcb? As the total load would be lower?

Is that a pun above in your quote?

I do a fair bit of work at a mates farm. In his sheds I have installed 70w SON fittings. biggest shed has 6. I wire them using SWA into a contactor as without it the larger barns are too much for the mechanical timer used on the circuit.

He has told me (honest truth as i am never there in the dark so havnt seen it for myself) that the cows love the orange glow from them and they gather underneath it. His cows are dairy and has not noticed any difference with the production.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that mate. I have purchased the above light to see how bright it actually is. Turns out he only needs 4-5 lights at the moment. Just to light the area where he feeds the cows. Eventually he wants
most othe the barn lit up, so when the time comes I will be fitting son fittings.

Yeah the SHED was intended to be a pun!!!!!

What do you all theink of the low energy floods above????

I personally dont like them. Have used simelar and not enough light emitted from them. It all depends on the location of them. My mates barn has open ends and are not very weather proof so anything hanging on jack chain or not fitted securly would be a problem.
