Afternoon all,

This is my first post here so please bear with me on this one. A friend of mine has recently had a new light fitted in his bathroom fitted by the farther in law. He wasn't very forth coming with information but he says that the children's bedroom light doesn't work at all I'm guessing these two rooms are close to each other. Apparently he cut back the existing cables in the bathroom light to accommodate the new fitting and didn't mark up any cables when he was done. Now is it a case of he has muddled up the cables in the bedroom fitting i.e permanent live with switch live, or is it a deeper issue. I'm going round on Monday evening to see the job so just looking for a heads up and advice.

Cheers Guys

It sounds like he has got a loop in loop out circuit, and has got it connected up wrong.

You can and probably will spend an age trying to sort it out. It isn't a massive problem to fix, as long as you have the know how and the equipment. However trial and error could make the problem a lot worse or you could get hurt.

These types of jobs are best left to an Electrician, it will cost you about an hours labour to get it fixed. I appreciate you want to have a go and save a few bob, but as simple as lighting circuits are, they are a pig to sort out if you don't understand the wiring arrangements, and there are several ways of wiring lighting.

Cheers..........Howard

what he said^^^^. probably a simole case of wiring it wrong, but without experience, you could be pigging about for ages ands stillnot get there.

Mm sounds interesting I have had training as an electrician so I do have a basic understanding of a wiring circuit. its been a while since I've been in the domestic field, just curious to know what people thought of the situation.

fixing out light circuits is quite frequent work for domestic sparks. get yourself a schematic drawing of uk loop system, two way switching, intermediate switching, learn how it works, have a continuity tester with you and some wago connectors to get you out of taped choc block mess. stay safe, turn it off and prove dead, getting a belt when on a ladder is not fun.

getting a belt when on a ladder is not fun.

what's wrong with a belt? we can't all afford braces.

Thanks for the information very helpful indeed I will look into this before Monday, just wanted to get my head around it. Didn't want to go in blind, it mite be something as simple as a cross connection.

Evening all,

Just come back from this lighting job, turns out that the light in the hall was also changed as well as the bathroom light, witch made things a little more difficult than I thought. Is their something I'm missing???
