We have a bathroom ceiling extractor fan in our loft extension that needs replacing. It was fitted in 2005. When the fan was removed, we saw that the fan had never been connected with ducting to the vent that had been fitted in the roof. We have electrical cover so called them out. They say they'll replace the fan as part of the cover but we have to fix the ducting. What is the best way of doing this, is it an easy fix to do ourself or do we need another electrician?

If it’s a regular 4 inch fan, (100mm), common in bathrooms, you can buy flexible ducting from the likes of screwfix. You may need need an adaptor if the vent to outside is a different size or shape.

You don’t need an electrician to fit the ducting, but it is a common thing for us to do along with fitting the fan.

If you have the ducting in place, then whoever changes the fan can stick it on easy enough.

Things might not be quite as simple as that, especially if the vent is in the roof and the ducting will run uphill from the fan to the vent. Extracting smells will be fine, but any water vapour in the extracted air is likely to condense in the ducting when the loft is cold. This can drip from the ceiling, find its way into the fan electrics, or stain the ceiling around the fan.
