Hi guys
just come across job that someone has changed single light for 6 downlighters in bathroom about 2 years and no rcd protection, it was the persons son who done the job he has just finished course to be qualified, his excuse was job not finished yet, he seems to think its ok, my opinion is the rcd should have gon in first, no cert supplied either, input required so I can inform his mother what to do

bottom line is people will do what they want in their own homes. Whatever you do round there her boy will be putting hes 2p's worth in causing you grief so i wouldnt jump in knocking his work. Why has she not chose her own son to do the work..... smells a bit funny to me

thanks for reply, she had sse in on thursday had free servey of her electrics done, and found many faults, one that no cpc on lights, no rcds, 32amp fuse on 9.5kw shower (cable is 6mm) told that as no cert she could be liable for ÂŁ5000 fine son fitted lights in bathrooma nd hall and fitted new cable and shower, but did not upgrade fuse or as should have done fitted rcd

no RCD on lights is not the biggest problem i can see, apart from that if they are metal surrounds and are 240v and not 12v selv..!
if they are installed in correct zones and are IP Rated i would not worry to much,

cpc on lights is not a problem provinding you have insulated fittings!! i.e plastic.!
it sounds to me that the house in in need of some TLC and Rewiring the Lights or incorporating a Earth cable may be the way forward,

the shower on other hand !! WHHHOOOAAA! 32 on 6mm is fine but a 9.5kw is not! surprised she does not get nuisance MCB/Fuse tripping..! but then again what they are advertised and what they actually pull are always different!! manufacturers worst case scenario is printed

my money is that the green earth sleeving is missing also!!

suppose its down to what she wants to spend putting things right? and of course what her son tells her, think you will just have to advise her tell her what its going to cost to put right and then wait for the call that may not come. I have spent too much time going round to jobs like this they take all the advise and then do nothing about it? make s me wonder why they ask in the first place.

hmm sound like you got a right snakes nest there...! so many angles to get bitten!!

my personal advice,

check bond and earth ..!!
Check what the IR readings were like on the rings and cooker and shower! if good i would suggest a new split 17th CU..

tell her that the shower either needs to be derated or the cable needs to be increased to 10mm to satisfy safety!

RE-Wire the lights

walk away smiling and knowing said son will be in to tinker soon as you gone!!

if supplementary bonding is in place but no RCD....then no.....as its just a change of luminaire.....if no supplementary bonding is in place together with no additional protection (RCD)....then both these scenarios..are a (2)....requires improvement.....and as such........

A free survey and they only want 5k? bargain. I didn't realise they could do that. Why on earth did she get SSE in?
