How come most bathroom lights are standard bay cap fittings but not ip rated, never thought about it before but just been to price some dl's and the thought crossed my mind

If they are d/ls or close to the ceiling, the manufacturers can get away with making bathroom style lights that arent IP rated as many bathroom ceilings are above 2.25m. That's what I think anyway.

All bathroom / shower room fittings are or should be IP rated. you are proberbly looking at batten holders which are not bathroom fittings

yes i know, my point is they are not in vast majority of properties i visit (often recently rewired properties too) although usually on council contracts yet not picked up by labc

This is very true. For years the humble batten lamp was the accepted bathroom fitting, so there will be lots about. It's been years since I did new builds, what is the norm in bathroms now chaps?

I agree, there are hundreds about, and recently installed as you say. I cant make a comment about who installs these lights. However on a personal note the heights of ceilings may put these lights out of zone, I must get some of that drippy steam that doesnt rise above 2.35 meters!

Nearly all the local authority houses we go in have a batten holder in the bathroom.

They ask for these to be fitted now......

For some reason the pictures wont display, the fitting is an ice breaker 28W 2D.

Impossible there is no zone 3, and anyways always seem just offset from centre (which is a privacy thing to do with silhouette) and nothing to do with zones.
2.25 height is only reasonable argument but never bothered to measure any

my point is that labc etc only seem concerned with regs when we do any work but their contractors dont have to worry about it

Cheers Lenny, I was wondering, because I have been fitting similar IP rated fittings in properties I have renovated. I have been fitting either 28W or 16W Thorn 2D fittings, much safer than the humble batten fittings.

Don't get me wrong folks I would always have IP rated in a bathroom, regardless of where, but the regs state tha they can be put above 2.25 (everyone knows steam can't get above 2.25 meters in the UK because of our low centre of gravity) and this is why manufacturers market non ip bathroom lights, and why people can get away with installing them.

As far as Local Authority not practicing what they preach - don't get me started, some of the things I've seen on some Newport council houses are absolutely shocking. Horrifying in fact. In fact I don't think I have been in a council house that hasn't had at least one major safety flaw.

Right I'm going to go off on one again because this really get's my goat. Have you ever tried to drive around in March in any town? It is impossible because they are literally digging everything up. They do this in March so that they can spend their budget before April 1st (if they don't spend this year's budget, they will get less funding for next year). Instead of doing this, why don't they spend the money throughout the year on, oh I don't know, maybe the safety of the people living in their houses? Even if they did have to do this mad rush at March rubbish, at least they could sub contract a load of sparks and gasmen to go round houses during this month installing as many 17th boards and bonding as is possible, and doing whatever it is gas men do. This would be conducive to the workings of society, rather than fannying about getting on literally everybody's nerves putting up 'road closed' signs willy nilly, and leaning on shovels in a whimsical manner.

Rant over.
