Hi All,

I have a job to replace a bathroom mirror light. Do I still need to protect with an RCD?

Any help appreciated,
T0M0

Yes, you should anyway.

However, as long as it's like-for-like, then normally no. But ALWAYS try and push one.

Quick response rocker - cheers.

If the CU is rewireable fuses, what's best way to install an rcd? I guess separate unit but where do you pick tails up from? Could install tails connector but mosy of these small units won't accept 25mm tails. How do get round this?

Thanks again.

Depends on how far you want to go with it. If the mirror light is a spur off the ring your laughing - tails into a henley block, then split tails into the existing board and use a small 2 way or 'shower' board for the ring main. Stick the existing ring into the new unit and voila.

The best bet is a board change though... try for it, the worst they can say is no.

If any problems with either of these you can use an RCD protected spur (FCU) but to be honest at the same kind of price as the shower board I'd go with option 1.

Good man :)

It's off the lighting so I'll try for the rcd on lighting circuit - I believe that would mean no bonding needed?

Cheers again

No supplimentary bonding AS LONG AS there's no other sources such as shower or shaver point on a seperate circuit in the bathroom (or zone 0,1 or 2 if it's a huge bathroom).

You still need main bonding, obviously.

Really though, push for a board change. You'd be suprised by the amount of extra work I've had from basically slagging off Wylex rewireables!

I'll try for the board change but didn't get the impression they had much money over the phone.

One last question - if it's a direct replacement - does it need Part P cert?

Cheers

I'd do a minor cert for a like-for-like anyway, but putting the RCD on would push an EIC as far as I'm concerned, but how do you interpret the regs? Do you class it as an extension or alteration, and as the RCD will be out of the bathroom, but the circuit will be worked on in the bathroom, is that extension or alteration in a special location??? I would say that was a grey area, probably best to notify. I would, anyway.

Not sure re regs - on 17th upgrade next monday. That's the reason for the post. Problem I've got is my experience was 1985 - 2000, before Part P! I'm heavily experienced but just returning to the trade that now has this part P.

Had a stint at bathroom fitting 05-07 and got 2391 then but never did anything big enough to really get to grips with testing. I'm finding it really frustrating as I feel like a flipping novice now. I've put myself on a one day practicle testing course which I'm hoping will resolve this.

But back to your question, it is a grey area and as such I err on the side of caution and notify.

Thanks again.

A one day course will give you a nice grounding but these regs are laughably complicated sometimes. Always refer to your OSG and big red book, but that's easy to say - if you don't know that you should be looking something up, why would you!?

A good thing that helped me was an 'ooky 17th ed course disc off ebay. cost about three quid and reading through it gave me quite a good footing in the regs and what they're there for.

Thank you, both. Seems like common sense may have prevailed, and the fellow is indeed going for one of the modern mirrors you mentioned...
