What code would you give for a batten holder in a bath/shower room? I know that its zone dependant but I have been calling a code 2 for zone 1 and 2 even if it’s mounted on the ceiling slightly above 2,25m.
The batten holder then needs to be replaced with an IP rated fitting, this then requires a RDC fitting to the bathroom circuit opening a can of worms that may require a consumer unit upgrade.
On the other hand if an IP light was already installed and all bonding in pace, a code 4 regarding the RCD is all that’s required.

Any thoughts?

I would give this a Code 2.

I can't see where you are comming from in that having changed from a battern to an IP 45 fitting then requires an RCD. Desirrable as this is, you can make a "like for like" change without even having to write a MEiWC.

If it is mounted above 2,25 meters then its outside the zones !
I would read that general rules apply and no requirement for Ip rating

If I am not missing something or reading the post wrong, then I would say that
it is permited in that location and that we should be wary of imposing our own criteria

Advising or deciding that it could be a danger if the lamp shattered and injury could occur that way may be agreed
Changing the fitting for an enclosed type would be like for like

Andrew,

Remember that the zones are measured from the bottom of the bath and not the floor, which will bring the light fitting into zone 2 in many cases. In some instances the light is very marginally outside zone 2 vertically, but personally I would give this code 2 just as you are doing. The lack of an RCD I am assured is code 4 provided there is an RCD for sockets potentially for external use, but going back to the bathroom, if there is no RCD then you will also need to verify the supplimentary bonding. If you have neither an RCD nor supplementary bonding then it goes back to a code 2.

Are you quite sure about that?

701.32.3

Zone 1 is limited by:

(i) the finished floor level and the horizontal plane corresponding to the highest fixed shower head or water outlet or the horizontal plane lying 2.25m above the finished floor level, whichever is higher.
