Can someone advise me of their suggested rec coding when identifying a batten holder in a bathroom. In many instances these have probably been installed during the 16th Edition. I have had a look at the esc doc and I believe that c3 would be the most likely classification due to the environment it isinstalled in. Personally I do not not like changing these at client request for an enclosed 2D light as many older people are unable to change the lamp when they fail whereas most people can find someone to change normal lamp.

Yes if normal ceiling height then prob out of zones 2.25M).

But agree not the best idea in a bathroom. Be better in an enclosed light fitting.

As most ceiling heights in a modern house exceed the 2.25M that constitutes a Zone ( most ceilings are 2.4m) then generally the use of a batten holder is acceptable, of course if you have a ceiling lower and the batten holder comes into it, then yes perhaps a code 2.

I would of course also look at regs regarding environment, but unless it is really bad, then no codes

This raised a bit of a smile for me!! These batten holder type light accessories were the standard fit for all bathrooms since the 40's maybe even before, certainly ever since i came into the industry. Never known one, that was in good condition ever being the cause of injury or death, in all that time either!! So what's so different now then, ....not saying i like them, or even the look of them, but it certainly doesn't make the dangerous!! Can't say that i noticed any increase in the incidence lamp failures in my parents house ,while i was living there either!! Mind they did change the batten holder for a ''Heat/Light'' (circular infer-red fitting) back in the 70's, ....I suppose there not allowed now either, unless they have some IP rating to them...haha!!

I suppose it's all to do with this bathroom zoning crap you have now, we didn't need all this zoning in bathrooms before, and can't see why you need it now. The previous Reg's covered basically what you have now, with perhaps a little more leeway to use a bit of commonsense.

Bathrooms have always been a sort of bone of contention in the UK. I can't see any problem whatsoever for arguments sake of having an RCD protected socket outlet in a bathroom, ...everyone else allows them. Using a 10mA integral socket outlet like most of the other european countries (USA/Canada uses 6mA) what or where's the problem?? lol!!

my old grandpa ( spark in railway) fitted hundreds of these infrared ring lights then were brill quick heat in the bathroom n off when not needed never had an issue with them As for batten holders the L.A. i served time with fitted them as standard with H.O. skirts and pendants with seals and H.O. skirts in kitchens
On a personal side I find the RCD everything culture a bit of overkill and as joePublic now thinks "its got an RCD its safe" when it may NOT be safe and RCD may not operate ect ect RCDs are something else to go wrong Something else to forget to test Something else Joe Public doesnt understand As mentioned already poor old mrs jones wont be able to change her 2d lamp or indeed probably have one available ect ect it seems that no thought has been given to practicalities like this Mrs jones will think the electrician is just fitting this new fangled stuff so he can get called out more when things fail
