hi guys can some body tell me, how to test a battery. if i just test for voltage with a meter will this give me a true state off the battery.
thanks

what type of battery and what voltage? If it is a car battery most motor accessory shops will test it for free and i believe they are best tested under load to check that the voltage does not fall away. Most batteries are 1.5V per cell, but small AA batteries normally give about 1.6V when they are healthy, 1.3 and they are finished.

If its a battery from a burglar alarm to a car battery then then if you log on to ACT meters you will find the Intel batery tester but rememember these type of batteries have a 5-10 lifespan so you should always put the date on a battery when you install it and not when you test it. As for smaller batteries replace as and when required

Hi wolfiehogan,

Looks like there are some very good replies. As an idea you could look on line for a pecification sheet of the battery you are looking at testing and check out what the manufacturer says about it.
The points mentioned so far are very good and do point out that it is the voltage per cell that is important and obviously the application / type of battery etc.
Hope this is of some help.
Best wishes
Rex
