Hi People,

I am installing a 24d/c system in the next couple of weeks, the system will be controlling dampers and actuators for windows and vents to open incase of fire. The system is fed from a main control panel which will feed five floors each with an addressable module. I have been asked to now install battery back up for the system which in the worst case scenario will draw a maximum of 6A p/h. I basically want to know what is the best way of going bout this? Or is there any websites that are good for this type of detail? I have looked but google drags up loads of rubbish.
The system is not linked to the fire alarm as it has its own smoke detectors and fire fighter over ride switch.

Thanks

Hang on, your installing some sort of system to control dampers, window openers and vents, but it's not connected to the fire alarm !!!!!

I hope for your sake this is for for a fire escape stairwell or similar?? .... But why the buildings BMS or fire alarm control system isn't involved, beats the hell out of me...lol!!!

Hi engineer 54 and yes you are correct it is for a stairwell ventilation system and again on your second point you are correct we usually install a bms signal but there is all different contractors and stupid politics so we are not installing that side of it unfortunately. We usually buy our panels in but have seen a 50% rise in the price so are starting to design our own panels instead.

6Amps back-up power sounds very low for a 24vDC system. Is the back-up power holding the shutters closed? I'm assuming these shutters are sprung normally open (without power)......

i take it this panel has no battery charger facility,if not route the 24vdc control voltage via a mains relay fed from a fire alarm type psu take the mains supply for this from the mains supply of your control panel, these psu's will take upto 2x 17a or even 2 x 38a batteries depending how big you want to go,the psu will charge the batteries and if the mains fails will connect to the batteries from the psu to your 24v control circuit via the realy, ive seen some of those vent panels and all have had battert back up built in,tho if your making your own depending on the size panel you use you could strip the guts out of a psu and fit it inside yours,if not just mount side by side

I think i know what you mean, there is a powerful BMS system and there is also a sophisticated fire alarm system, but by different manufacturers, that can't talk to each other because neither manufacturer is willing to divulge there protocol. I've had that wonderful situation before, a long time ago now, ....but something i have never forgotten....lol!! And made sure never happened again!!
