I agree with what it says but how many of us on here have C+G / tec level 3 but don't have a NVQ qualifications? I know to gain a NVQ you have to build a portfolio over time but and time served is a good thing, but I worry how many time served sparks may be pigeon holed with the Electrical Trainee because they don't have the all important NVQ? It is bad enough that we all have to keep re-qualifying every time there is a new edition of the regs or an amendment or because a new qualification has been introduced the ones we hold are deemed as outdated and no longer recognized.

I think it can only be a good thing. But it is only a recommendation and will (maybe) be implemented over the next 5 years, which gives me plenty of time to get the required qualifications.

Also, from the way the document is worded it looks as though you will only need the level 3 NVQ to carry out notifiable work, seeing as though that is: 1. Installing a CU, 2. Installing a new circuit from a CU or.. 3. Any electrical work withing the zones of a special location, there is still going to be lots of work (the vast majority of 'smaller jobs') that you will not need to have the level 3 qualification for.

I'll be interested to see what actually happens over the next few years.

It does say 'NVQ or equivalent', so I wouldn't rule out your present qualification as being adequate.

NVQ's have only really been deemed necessary in relatively recent years, because it was evident that even time served apprentices wasn't getting the necessary all round work skills and experience during their training. Some had only ever been involved in domestic work etc.... Couple this with the declining level of college training standards, that seem to base the majority of coursework and practical training around domestic type installations, and you have the reasoning behind the NVQ's particularly at the the level 3 band!!

This wasn't the case at all, in the majority of cases for indentured apprenticeships in the past, during the time of C&G 236/2360. No such thing as NVQ's and AM2's etc in my day. But the majority of electricians of my era,coming out of there time could and would have been competent to have entered any sector of the electrical industry....

What makes me laugh, is that the domestic sector has always been considered by fully qualified electricians, as being the bottom of the pile, yet here we are, insisting on NVQ Lv 3 for those electricians working in the domestic sector, and sod all requirement for the far more onerous sectors like heavy/large commercial and industrial sectors. Only the JIB seem to have any control over these sectors and then only during the construction stage!!

What you need is an industry wide STANDARD that ALL Electricians need to attain. Otherwise it's all basically just an ongoing farce, which suits the Scam providers, who i have no doubt will find ways to circumvent or minimise the majority of these suggested changes...

Once they've sorted out electricians they need to sort out all other incompetent employees.

Surely the scams will now just say to all thier domestic installer electricians, sorry but you can't renew your membership until you have this qualification. Here's a leaflet on our current training courses at extortionate prices, oh you'll find that course you need on there.
its not like someone who has been ripped off for a Electrical Trainee course is going to give up his new career because he now has to prove his worth, by paying more hard earned to the organisations that created the mess in the first place.
the article does say NVQ level 3 or equivalent, I'd like to think my C&G 236 and certificate of apprenticeship would cover that
