I will shortly be joining a new project in China, as you might know, there can be problems gaining access to many web sites from China. I'm looking for means to by-pass the Chinese block. ...To this end i've found a site that actually allows you to use your current IP address. I may use this site, but i was wondering if anyone knew of any others that may be a cheaper option?? As the above site wants 30+ quid a month for the privilege...lol!!!

So if any of you computer whizz-kids know of any proxy (i think that's what there called) sites that are secure and worth looking at, i would be very grateful..

Proxies are a constant cat and mouse game. A proxy will utilise a certain ip range, a day or two later the ranges are discovered and added to the blocklists by the powers that be. This goes on ad infinitum. A better option is a VPN that will support encryption. You'll pay for most VPN's however but when it comes to privacy their worth it. You could also try the TOR network of course, it's free but they restrict the protocols, they don't allow bittorrent traffic for example to prevent congestion of their network. Link Tor (anonymity network) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks Marvo,

...Yes the site i was talking about is such a VPN. How they can use my existing IP address is a little different from the normal way of doing things ... But i will check out your link and other such VPNs, and do a bit of comparison on services and costs...

i seem to remember watching something similar on bbc ones "click" program. maybe worth doing a search on their site or even dropping them an email. who knows it may save a few quid each month :)

Expatnetwork do one for ÂŁ5 a month, but it requires a small program to be installed to run it so you need full administrator rights on the computer you are installing to. Provides you with a UK IP address so you can access news, footie highlights, footie on the radio etc.

You could also set up a secure password protected proxy using your home computer as the proxy host. Soxcap was one option, but I done even know if the program is still available / supported.

Well i'm over here now and on some advice from others here, using the same VPN system i originally considered in my OP!!...lol!!

Made a bit of a mistake on the cost of the system though, the 30 quid a month was for the all singing all dancing version, that frankly i don't need... I am using the bog standard basic version...under 15 quid a month! ...lol!!! Had a few teething troubles, but all sorted now, so i'll see how it goes....

dammm was hoping the forum would be nice and quiet with out you for a while....!! :)

enjoy china...!

Hahaha!!! As they say, ...Life's a Bitch and then you Die...lol

Marvo,

I don't know, i'll enquire and let you know...

The system i'm using now let's me use the CYTA-Net IP address i use in Cyprus, just have to maintain the internet service over there. I just shifted from the top service to there basic service, which is peanuts a month and will be available whenever i go back for vacations/visits etc...

If you still have a presence in the UK, you could just use remote desktop if you have xp pro/vista ultimate/business/windows 7 pro/ultimate...

I was going to say some sort of Remote Desktop or VNC would also work, speed would depend on your internet connection at home though (especially all the way from China!)
