Hi everyone!
Just looking for some advice really, i initially started my electrical qualifications full time at college whilst i searched for an apprenticeship. This when the industry had already recessed considerably and was no easy task. I got taken on at a local company who were mainly audio visual contractors so the amount of actual electrical work (especially from an NVQ portfolio point of view) was very very limited.
It became apparent that i had been taken on due to my low apprentice wage rather than for the need of a fully qualified electrician, but hey ho, a job where i can still continue my qualifications is better than no job and being ousted from my course.
Soon after my employment contract changed. I was taken off the JIB pay scale (and not for the better let me assure you), promises of putting me through my inspection and testing and my 17th also went out of the window with the same excuses.
After 4+ years this has finally come to a head and its time for me to move on.
HOWEVER, i don't feel like i could approach an electrical contractor as although i theoretically have the knowledge (i did well at college and my grades substantiate this) i am certainly not going to tell them i have had 4 years experience working as an electrician, because i have not.
Ultimately i want to work for myself as a local electrician, i already do a foreigner now and again but i just don't have the experience of domestic work to start up on my own (confidently) because i certainly don't want to do any bad work for a customer.
I am going to phone around local sparks tonight and ask if i can go and work with them, i'm currently 8 quid (pound sign is broken) an hour so initially working for cheap is not an issue.
I just want your advice on where i stand and what my chances are, if you as an electrician got a phone call off me looking for work and experience would it be welcomed or shunned? I enjoy electrical work and certainly don't want to quit and look for another career path however my options seem to be ever more limited.
Thanks very much for taking the time to read it and even more so if you reply.
