Hi everyone, sorry to bother you all with some very basic questions I have.

I have been a trainee electrician for just over a couple of weeks now but I dont reall understand the wiring and what it does, sorry if this sounds daft.

If possible could somebody tell me the purpose of live, neutral and earth etc...

Also for example, why isnt there a neutral from say a light switch, or if there is, they are all put in a block connector and not connected to anything which I have seen at work ?

Again, sorry if I sound daft, just trying to get my head around the basics.

Thanks for any help and advice.

simplified, the current come in on the live and back on the neutral . that constitutes a circuit. the earth or cpc is there so that if there is a fault, the fault current goes to earth, thus causing the protective device to operate and isolate the supply. in switches, the switch is to interrupt the live so as to turn off the light/whatever. the neutral remains unbroken. that is just a basic idea. you will learn the theory as you go on.

Welcome to the forum, and there really is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to your starting level.

To be honest what now seems to be a total minefield of confusion in a few short months will become quite clear. I think the best thing to do is point you into some sort of direction rather than trying to stumble our way through electrical theory. becasue apart from a very few on here, none of us are teachers or tutors. I would ask your tutors what would be the best books to go for and take it from there

understanding comes with asking questions. never be shy of inquiring about stuff. we all had to learn onetime. ask your tutor the best books to buy. damn, just read your post, malcolm.

Solo,

Keep asking the basic questions, as others have said if you don't ask you won't find out. Your questions will get more involved as you and your knowledge progresses. Never be afraid to ask, and as i always say, there is no such thing as a stupid question. Stick around here and you will learn a lot, just like I do. It will take you 30 years plus to get the knowledge and experience that I have, and believe me I am still learning, and still ask questions. There is a good mix in this forum, in every field and of all levels of ability and experience, and for the most like me, more than willing to help and advise. Also don't be afraid to voice your opinions and chip in as and when you want to, it is a public forum, and everyone is entitled to say their piece.

Cheers.........Howard

Welcome to the forum.

Whilst were on questions, can i ask one ive found quite hard to take in? When would you use a fused switch/plug and when wouldnt you? And when would you use an rcd to n mcb?? Im nearly finished my level 3 2330 and i have so many questions i feel silly asking the tutor as i feel i should know already. Ive passed all my exams but im sure they ( tutors ) dont go into basics very well.

for permantly connected appliances i.e washing machine /cooker/ aand other items that are normaly stationary or just depends on power consumtion deticated circuits.

rcd is for fault protection and used when have high zs values for breaking devices i.e and for certain circuits. i.e bathroom, socket outlets,

hope this helps but im a learner to so i do stand to be politicaly corrected
