hi guys
got a call from a customer who tells me his beko fan oven trips the rcd every few days so i go and have a look,he tells me he has previously called out the local domestic aplliance man and he keeps replacing the element(3 times this year) so i took the element out and have a look and do IR check and it seems ok,did rcd tests and they were ok.one thing i did notice was the voltage in his bungalow was 252v the substation is almost in his back garden.
could it be the voltage at the higher end of the scale taking its toll on the elements or should i try the oven out of the rcd for a few days and see what happens

I think I have heard of problems with the metal fan blade rubbing against the oven body causing this sort of problem, can't remember the details now but may be worth seeing if the fan is loose and occasionally (every few days?) hitting the oven edge. Can't now quite see why this would cause a problem unless the fan blade is connected to neutral (or live!). Just a thought!
Also oven elements can absorb water if left for while and give low IR readings may be worth IR ing when been cold overnight and test again once it has been running for a while. Minimum IR test for ovens is 0.3Mohm.

Heating elements are nominally rated at 240V so your 252V is only +5% well within the product specification. However, running at this level of over-voltage will shorten the life of the element significantly, by as much as 50% if this was over the whole life of the element. The life expectancy for an oven heating element at the nominal voltage, would be expected to be >1000 hours.

And this is exactly what's happening to any appliance and lamps in the UK, that is manufacturer marked for a voltage of 230 volts!! Your all buying electrical stuff that isn't in the true sense of the words ''Fit for Purpose'' !! Yes we all know there is a tolerance, but even tolerances will still shorten the life of an appliance and lamps, especially as you are starting, with a 10 volt difference from the true nominal voltage to the make believe nominal voltage!! lol!!!

I wouldn't take the customers word that it's the oven that's at fault. I would test all the circuits the are on the RCD. Possibly there's already a high standing leakage current and the cumulative effect of the oven being on is taking it over the 30mA tripping threshold.

thanks marvo i will have a look at that on monday
