We've got about 20 - 30 Social houses to do during December / january, and they won't pay for our usual offering of either Power-One (ABB) / SMA, so need to start looking at value inverters.

What do others use, and what kind of issues have you had ? Any faults we'll have to build the cost of repeat visits into the install prices of course...

Typically these will be smaller installs from 1kw - 2.5kW.

Thx

Sorry to go all philosophical, but what now constitutes a Tier1 or Tier 2 inverter? It is not just about price or where something is made.

Our favorite single phase inverter is the Elterk HE-T. Has galvanic separation, in built web server, and good effciency. Great low light performance - seen one generating at 8.00AM on an overcast day in February. First bought them when they were £750.00 a pop for a 3.8kW. A Change in distribution arrangements and a reduction in warranty period from 10 to 5 years brought the price down to £500.00. I have never considered them Tier 2.

They are made in the far east for a well established Norwegian electro-mechanical company.

Andy at Sibert made a good point to me some time ago about many of the new entrants to the market. The main problem was not specification but provenance and lack of track record.

I also get iffy about ten year warranties from a company I don't know will be there to honour it if required.

Prices are still moving downward for both inverters and panels. Had an email this morning offering ET solar at 40.5p and a brand I've never heard of at 38.5p. (Tier 4 at least!). Twin trackers are available at £450.00. Someone will fit this stuff and undercut me. You could see domestics offered at £1 a watt the way things are going.

Differentiating product offerings can be difficult with inverters. Provenance does not always equal reliability.

Interested to know others thoughts on this.

Interesting discussion. I don’t tend to label inverters as Tier 1 or Tier 2 based on price or origin. I think it’s important not just to match the inverter to the panels but also to the customer.

Some customers will always be driven by price and will think that the inverter choice is unimportant. The logic being that all the datasheets show an efficiency of 95+% so all inverters must be equally good so why should they fork out extra for something that does the same job? It can be difficult to reason with such people and justify a more expensive inverter.

Some customers will have done their research and make sensible suggestions about what they want. We proposed a Power One for a customer a while ago and he responded by asking for the equivalent SMA which we were happy to fit at a higher price.

Most people on here would probably consider Power One as a decent brand but we’ve heard disappointing reports on this forum recently about their responsiveness to faults and general aftercare. I’d also wager that there are several other installers who’ve had similar issues. Adding that to the RISO issue (which seems to occur more with P1 inverters although it may not be the manufacturer’s fault) makes me wonder whether this brand is so amazing after all.

In my experience some of the cheaper Chinese inverters perform very well on non-complex installations. I’m off to China next month where I’m going to visit an inverter factory which should be fascinating. The manufacturer has sent me a free sample to test on my own house. It looks like a solid piece of kit, performs ok on PV-Sol and seems to have all the required certs.

I think many of the Chinese inverter brands are actually sub-divisions of larger companies which are involved in multiple sectors just as Hyundai, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, LG, Bosch, BP, Sharp, etc got involved in PV. But, some of these panel producers have exited the industry and finding replacements might be tricky. At least with an inverter it’s possible to swap for a different brand without much difficulty and without the stress of aesthetics.
