I am wiring a double dimmer switch in Uk. The power comes direct to the switch. and from ther to two ceiling lights. I am wiring in twin and earth flat cable. I dont have any diagram for the switch. There are two terminals at the back of each switch, common and live. Can someone tell me what cable goes to what terminal. I know this is very basic but I am used to wiring switches to ceiing roses

You say you are used to wiring light switches to ceiling roses, im thus struggling to see your problem as this is exactly the same as the dimmer is a switch too and should carry the same markings for connection, as mentioned this is so basic explain exactly what part of it is confusing you?

Thanks for your help.
Unless I am loosing my marbles In this particular switch there are four terminals ,two common and two live . Two neutral wires are joined together in a block . The four terminals are connected with three red and one black cable.

Should the thrre black (neutral ) be joined together and the red feed in connected to the common with a loop to the other common. The other two reds go to the live terminals.

Is that not right

The common is the Live feed, the terminal marked L1 is the switch out to light, both common's will need to have live feed at them this may be achieved by putting a loop between the commons, any black cable that is connected to the switch originally is likely a switched live and wants marking up so before you disconnect from old switch, the black wires in the connector are likely to be neutrals looping in and out and should be left as so.
Are any of these switches 2way in that the same light can be switched at more than one point, also are the new dimmers plastic or metal ?

that's how i see it. if you have a multimeter, with power off, check ( on ohms ) across each cable. the red/blacks to the lights should each read the resistance of the lamps. ( about 30- 70 ohms for tungsten lamps). then the other cable is your feed.
