Hi all

Went to a job yesterday to chase out the walls in the living room. Chasing went fine but very dusty as you would expect from black mortar.
The problem came when trying to clip the cables withing the Chases.
The clips would simply fall out, or the mortar would just crumble.

Anyone know of anything that will hold the cable in black mortar or does anyone have any pointers?

Cheers !!!!!!

Depends on what you're trying to do and how deep the chase is, but you might have to self-medicate the plasterer by mixing up some bonding coat and using it as packing. Blow (vacuum!) the dust out first and damp the mortar a bit.

If you've got the width to play with, try drill/plug/screw onto some big penny washers (aka 'repair' washers) and use the washer to trap the cable (good for 2 cables, screw goes in the middle).

You could also use a gripfill type product if really desperate, but if you do then just remember that cable's never gonna come out again!!

I'm also assuming that there's a reason why you can't use some oval tube - my preference in this situation - cable safely inside tube, fix tube instead by whatever means necessary!!

in this situation, i would use oval tube with the clips screwed and plugged into the brick.

Not sure why so many people are against using oval conduit to begin with. I know it takes a bit longer, but it allows for rewires/alterations down the line, plus it keeps the cables reasonably protected from plasterers.

Don't let Gripfill come into contact with the PVC cable as the volatile solvent used in original Gripfill (green tubes) can breakdown the insulation.

Cheers Markie, I don't think I knew that! Can't think that I've ever actually done it personally, btw.

A lot of adhesives and sealants or the solvents in them can have an adverse affect on PVC insulation.

I occasionally bed alarm and telephone cables in a caulk bead to hide them from view (neater than surface trunking or clips) have never had any problems but wouldn't do it with mains carrying cables just in case
