I am working on a property at the moment nice big house full renovation all trades involved. Centre piece of the house is the new kitchen top of the range.

Architect drawing showed 12 downlights in a U shape. Ceiling to be strapped and re sheeted. Perfect, joiners strapped ceiling and I ran all my cables, measured out exactly where I wanted downlights and clipped cables to original ceiling exactly where required. I then drew a sketch and included all dimensions from walls etc and between lights so I know where to drill holes.

I scanned this sketch and emailed it to the builder for his reference so that he knew exactly where lights were going so as not to conflict with other trades

So the joiners have put their new ceiling up and it has been plastered and painted, went back to fit lights an holes have already been drilled - by joiners and the lines of downlights are like a dogs hind leg - all over the place!

Really annoyed because I always like to get these bang In line by using laser level, drilling 3mm hole right on laser line then my, in this case, 70mm hole

Customer has not commented on this yet but I don't think they have looked too close, thing is they will obviously presume I drilled the holes and think i am a numpty and this could affect my reputation. Don't want to highlight to customer as I get a good bit of work off builder and don't want to burn my bridges

Mentioned the fact they were out of line to builder and he said too late now. What do I do!!???

If these builders generate alot of work for you then bite your lip... if your more freelance and reputation is more damaging then express to the builder that its your rep' at stake and the joiners have clearly messed up... take it as a learning curve and keep customer out of it unless they notice.....

I always make sure i do the drilling id never trust another trade no matter how much info i supplied they won't have the pride that you will so will do as fast as possible....

Agreed. Would be really annoyed if someone drilled my holes.

Agreed also, why should someone else take all the fun of getting covered in plaster?

Seriously though, if someone else does it. As well as them not drilling them out in a straight line, it's a wonder they cut them out the right size.

I have been done by someone who cut mine out, perfectly in line, but wayyy bigger than they should have been, he thought all down lights were a standard size. So after trying to be helpful, he lumped himself with repairing them all!

You just need to flag it up to the foreman / site agent, state it's been messed up by another trade, and isn't up to scratch. Take photo's to cover your own arse and move on to something else until they realise the customer is coming tomorrow....
