Had a call today from a lady saying she had lost all power and lights to the 4th and 5th story of her house. She explained it would be good if i could pop round after she collected her children from the local private school ,all 3 of them !
Anyway recent bathroom installation they had put a 10.5 kw shower and a 9kw instaneous undersink water heater of a small 4 way board in a cupboard. It also feed power and lights.
This was supplied from a MI cable off a 32amp MEM fused isolater and surprise surprise the fuse wire had blown.MI cable looked like 4mm ,the copper o/d was about 12mm.Does anyone know of a chart cross relating csa to o/d .The isolater was wired in 16mm tails from a henly block.
A right mess in meter cupboard, bloody wires, rewireable stuff everywhere.A mixture of isolators and small old consumer units.House was immaculate though ,electric cupboard never touched.
Anyway bathroom and builders just got on and did the work and on the face of it it looks like a good clean job, obviously just the wiring issue.Shower and sink heater was wired in 10mm twin and earth.
I propose to run new tails from henly block to feed a 100 amp isolater switch in meter cupboard Then 16mm armoured up rear of property to feed a 5 way board.Run is about 12 metres then all circuits on RCBO's.
With a possible 80amps plus being drawn upstairs and a house main fuse of 100amps there does not leave much power left.Espically when you looked at the kitchen with a large range cooker.
One other thing i noticed outside armoured cable which looks like 4mm was terminated in a plastic enclosure. This enclosure was fed from a RCD 13amp socket and she said it tripped a lot ! supplies outside freezer, garden and garage power and a poo echo thing that recycled everything into a reed bed (her description). The socket was on a radial supplied from a old fuse board with a shared 32 amp ring main fuse.So 3 cables into the fuse.
A right mess and now i have to come up with a price ? not fixed though.

Oh and the cupboard is tiny I need to shrink by about 3 foot so i will add ÂŁ200.00 for he chiropractor to sort me out after.

SWA up the outside of the property with cleats to wall. Will go up back of house so not seen much and there is a large tree to cover a lot of it.
Had a thought tonight ok with heights but my ladders are not long enough !.Another ÂŁ200 to cover my new ladders.

Looked at another job tonight, very old wiring and all garden power for sheds, water feature lights all fed with normal Twin and Earth through old hose pipes ! longest run about 25 metres.

Has anyone had experience of using a change over switch. So I could feed of one 40amp MCB and have a change over switch located in the bathroom and then simply switch from shower to hand basin. Not ideal but existing cable could be kept i guess.Only ones i have ever come across is a IMO bit red rotary isolator, not the most attractive thing to have in your bathroom. But with the rest of the house pretty well loaded it might be the solution.

Any thoughts, previous experience ?? seen them in factories but never domestic.

Thanks
