Maff

I dont usually do board changes on old properties unless its a full rewire, However my neighbour wants an upgrade to a 17th edition board, and it would be really handy as a part P reasessment job. The thing is he has night storage heaters on economy 7 which are fed from their own CCU which consists of a main switch (100A DP) and an MCB for each heater. If I swap the main CCU to one covered by RCD protection do I also need to put an RCD infront of the storage heaters too?

Can you replace the MCB's with RCBO's? This way you will only lose one heater, and not all the lot. If you replace the main switch with a RCD main switch, then you dont need additional RCD's at each heater, but if the RCD trips, then you have no heating!, so the RCBO method would be the best all round fit. It isnt the cheapest option, but with winter upon us you dont want a frozen customer. I have re read your post, and you intend to replace the CU anyway, then fit a wylex, standard 60947-3 main switch, and an RCBO for each heater, rcbos are a about ÂŁ15 a piece if you shop around, and you should get a good deal somewhere for a CU and the rcbos as a job lot.

Cheers............Howard

I'd change it for an Rcbo board. Can get a 14 way loaded with 8 RCBOs for ÂŁ90 now. Not bothered with satans dual Rcd nonsense for a while. Or prefer a split load- one RCCB and some Rcbos.

Howard beat me

If you are only changing the main board and not changing anything on the storage heater board then you can leave that one as it is. It likely would not meet the current regulations for RCD protection but as it is not being worked on then there is no need to upgrade it.

In essence for a number of reasons, the answer is no, you do not have to provide RCD protection for tha storage heaters.
Unless of course, the client wants you to do so.
