Depends, what is the circuit for?Any advice as to wether you need to upgrade the whole fuse board to 17th edition if you need to install a new circuit to an old metal wylex board with the 2 pin push in type mcb.
If ciruit is not for equipment for outside use or in a special location and all cable run within zones you can use a MCB otherwise must be rcd protected
1st and most important clarify Ze is sufficient also main and gas/water bond is upto date, remember you must not bond to lead...
If ciruit is not for equipment for outside use or in a special location and all cable run within zones you can use a MCB otherwise must be rcd protected, suggest PIR first, I made mistake long time ago and changed a db without a PIR then when it came to testing all circuits 1 circuit was shagged took me 6 hours to resolve. never again
as old wylex may not pick up faults an RCD will.
Ay...??
Even if its not in a special location it still needs RCD protection no matter where it is, unless you meet the requirements for not needed RCD (Armoured, surface mount or over 50mm deep ect..)
Just because its not in a special location and in zones that doesnt mean No RCD is needed..
the circuit is for a cooker, if i am to issue a certificate then surely any circuit would have to be rcd protected and the old board cannot take an rcbo.
Use a shower consumer unit which has a RCD main switch usually 63a 30Ma, then fit the appropriate rated MCB, henly block the supply tails with the new tails for shower C/U, bung in your earth cable to an earth block if needed, this way you dont have to touch the old stuff and you can issue certs and it complies with blah blah blah.
Job done.
