Borrowed neutral

I'm trying to install a spur off an existing lighting circuit.
I thought I would be able to replace a single switch with a double and use the new switch for the spur.
However the builder hasn't brought the Neutral down to the switch, it's up in the ceiling and I can't access it, the floor above is tiled.
I've seen references to "borrowed neutral" and I can probably pick up a neutral from a ring circuit used for tumble drier/washing machine
Is this allowed and will there be any problems back at the fuse box??
Alternatively are there any "trick of the trade" that will sort out this problem??

Hmm, good point. In which case we could do with some more work, so go ahead and borrow this neutral, then when it doesn't work pay a sparky to come and sort it out.

C2 every day of the week glenn.

And it would work, just potentially dangerous - unless it was a 17th ed board and the interconnected circuits were on different RCD's.

Ok to start with it is against the regs as has been pointed out, then if the line and neutral are on different RCD's they won't hold as they will be out of balance. And non-technically it doesn't make much sens.

I can honestly say that I posted my answer before I saw Mark's anwer. And I thought C2 then cheated slightly by looking it up which took extra time. By that time he had posted!

As an apprentice I would have no shame in admitting I don't know something.

Until I came on here I didn't know borrowed neutrals existed, so I've learnt something!
