Spent a few confusing hours today on a job out today where the client reported problems with the communal sockets. After my socket tester started giving me some funny readings i turned off the mcb for the socket circuit. When disconnecting the socket I got a shock off the earth. Turns out the lighting circuit mcb was sending a live to the socket earth.
I then realised that it was making the whole fusebox earth terminal live. I eventually realised the consumer unit had no main earth, and rectified the situation immediately.
After the lighting fuse tripped now that it had an earth connection. I eventually tracked down the fault to one of the time lag switches which had its common terminal making contact with the metal back box.
God knows how long its been like that without an earth ;0))
