Just for fun, When you are in a quiet and you put your thumbs in your ears and listen you should hear a low rumbling sound of about 25hz, my question is what causes this noise.
I will be most impressed if you can give the answer without researching the internet but to stop all the obvious ones it isnt anything to do with bloodflowing.

I must have a crack at this without cheating so,

The brain runs on electrical nerve pulses,so

If the persons name is eddy,he might have currents flowing in the brain vibrating something or other

If we ignore the Eddy and his partner Flo bit and stick to the point, the answer is obvious ... assuming all things are purely logical. If we assume that sticking ones fingers in ones ear cuts out all external noises (yes, I know ... all noises except wife's bleating ..... nothing seems to prevent that bit of logic lol) .. but we digress! .. there we are with fingers stuck up our ears and no noise except that mildly interfering 25Hz sub woofer interfering ............ I am not going to google it ... but I have been pondering .... I reckon.....

I reckon it be a 25Hz gurgle .. that be it ... soon to be translated into a 35Hz warble that will be accompanied by a "Pfhaw!" and a bit of rumble .......

:eek::eek::D

Is something to do with your thumbs only blocking out the high frequencies so you only hear the low freq. Or something to do with your ears adjusting?

as your brain works from electrical impulses from nerves i would say that it is some kind of feed back when all other noise is stopped?

Does anyone actually know the answer or are we going to be kept in suspence forever lol

If its nowt to do with blood flowing, then it must be the beer pumping round then......:D

A few good guesses but no-one hit the nail on the head, the rumbling sound originates from the muscles in your hands and arms. The actin and myosin microfilaments in the muscles are continually stretching slightly and relaxing slightly, each small movement involves some rubbing of muscle over each other which produces a sound which is transmitted down the arm bones to the hand.

Tell me about it :D read New Scientist, Focus and got loads of books on quantum physics, think im a closet geek as i lead a normal life:)

Its good to know someone else buys new scientist,the quantum physics bit is a little over the top,nothing better than good old cosmology reading before a gutsfull of beer then,I suppose
We may have string theory in common though :)
