Hallo all.
I am new to this forum and would like to get some feed back on a problem that I and my colleague have come across.

At times we have both experienced the situation where the cardboard flange on a new reel of cable comes away from the central spigot. This makes the reel virtually un-useable as the cable tends to fall off the end and becomes tangled.

We have patented and developed a new product which will remedy this problem and enable the electrician to continue to use the damaged reel of cable.

It would be very useful to hear back from anyone who has also experienced this problem and what, if anything, you do when it happens?

Many thanks.

only really had a problem with those pyrsmann ones that come in a box, and unless your using a cable puller its no problem i feel

The worst cable it could happen on is 10mm single G+Y. I've had instances where I've binned quite a bit of cable when it's happened because there's just no way of sorting it.:(

Or is that until now.....:)

When this happens I put the broken side flat on the floor and spin the drum while my mate pulls the cable. No problems.

But it hardly ever happens because I only draw cables off using jacks.

Pretty common problem, especially if the cable has been hanging around a while, has got damp, or been damaged in some other way. If its a small cable, it gets binned (I am not self employed), if its a larger one, my mate has to hold it in his hands, and spin it round as I take the end off him.

Either that, or I cut it into approx 2 metre lenghts, then thru crimp it all back together, its the only way of it not getting tangled, costs a fair bit for the crimps though.
;)

Would be handy to have some solution to the problem, although I feel it would have to be pretty cheap.

Thanks Davey
I am hoping the crimping method is a joke.:)

How cheap, bearing in mind the cost of a reel of cable?

:p:D

As I say, I'm not self employed, so am not best placed to comment, I'm sure you'd get better feedback off others. I'd say, if you are carefull, you could go months without breaking a drum, on the other hand, we've had some pretty ropey makes of cable, where we were constantly having the sides fall off. Cant imagine someone wanting to pay more than 10-20 quid.

Could it be incorporated into a cable dispenser, or cable jacks somehow, or simply sold as a set with a set of jacks? May be more appealing that way, as you are paying for something you will use everday, with the benefit of a product which will save you time and money in the event of a drum breaking.

i'll gladly trile one for you to give some on site feed back mate

Thanks Beaver, we may end up sending some freebies out for trial, members of these forums could be a good source of feedback - I will keep you in mind.

The cable jacks are already available Davey, but I take your point about going for months without the problem occuring.
We do intend to market it at an acceptably low price to encourage electricians to buy it 'just in case'.
Having said that the company you work for may purchase a few units in order to save on the reels that get binned when the probem does occur.

Thanks very much for all the feedback - please keep it coming.
