When finding broken ring circuits when carrying out a periodic inspection, some with all legs discontinuous and some with the Line discontinuous - is it acceptable to mark this down as requiring attention without actually finding out the reason why the circuit is discontinuious???????????????

I know that in an ideal world we would all start to break down the ring and locate the problem, but jumping back into the real world for a minuite, is it acceptable to notethe problem therby requiring the client to arrange for the rectification of the problem??????????

Re: Brocken Ring ccts on Periodic

I suppose best practice would require that if a sample % of the accessories to be tested is the approach then if a problem is located the sample % should be increased untill the problem is resolved.

You are there to test and inspect, you have no obligation to rectify anything free of charge. The problem requires further investigation or improvement so code it 2 or 3 as you see fit, bring it to the attention of the person ordering the work, and move on.

Ask yourself this. Does the MOT tester repair your very dangerous brakes on your car FOC?, no he doesn't, all he can do is tell you there is a problem and it is dangerous, but he cant stop you using it.

Cheers........Howard

And if the problem is a nail in a cable or an old JB under floor boards ?

Re: Brocken Ring ccts on Periodic

still applies. a pir is a pir. it's up to you if you want to rectify any faults, up to a certain cost , for free. i usually tell the client that the pir cost is ---, and any minor faults will be dealt with on areasonable hourly rate + materials. major, time consuming , faults would be subject to quote.

Had this yesterday, simply marked it code 2 along with a couple serious problems went through the PIR forms with the customer and explained why I was branding the installation unsatisfactory. The customer then asked me to carry out all the remedial work. So will be going back to carry out the work.
