I had something through the post yesterday, it's a catalogue from brunstrut. It has a large picture of what looks like mecanno on the front, and inside is advertising various angle iron type fittings, and, puzzlingly, what appears to be a block of steel on a spring. A glance at the back places us further into the realms of the bizzarre with a picture of a parrot advertising galvanised wire.

Does anybody know what this stuff is? What's it for? Am I being wound up?

its unistrut mate, used in commercial and industrial work, everything from holding up cable tray/ladder/basket, to building frames to accomodate panels. also used by other trades.

Technically Unistrut is a brand name like Kopex, but yes, this looks pretty much the same.
I think the "block of steel on a spring" which is puzzling you is what is known colloquially as a "Zebedee" (like the guy off of the Magic Roundabout with the spring lodged up his prosterior) and securely grips the lip of the channel when a bolt or studding is tightened into it.

If you want something truly bizarre, the other day I saw an advertisment for a cake, except it was made with cheese!

i had the same leaflet fall threw my door the other day aswell, and it gave me an idea to make something totaly remote frm electrical installation! lmao:cool:

when Id finished my apprenticeship n got payed off ( council housing) First job i got was a factory n the guy said Grab some Zebbs n strut n get it ready for this tray run I just stood like he was talking a forigne language next day I was cutting strut n rod n fitting purlin clips beam clamps like a pro its fantastic stuff for building supports, shelfing /ect but its a barsteward when some lazy bugga cuts it with a chop saw n doesnt file edges GGGRRRR

As said earlier the original was Unistrut but lots of companies either manufacture it themselves or buy it in badged it as their own and sell it to compliment their own range of products

It is very versatile and has many uses and is only limited by the brackets available for it and imagination

I have in the passed prefabricated complete switchroom frames in the middle of the room because wall space was at a premium and more equipment space was needed

Never found much use for it in the domestic market though:D

Yes, to say it's versatile is an understatement. Shortly after leaving school I had a job labouring for a company which basically just made stuff out of Unistrut.
We used to make ceilings for x-ray rooms out of it; the finished product looks like an ordinary suspended ceiling like you might find in an office, but across the width of the room instead of the usual flimsy T-bars we used double Unistrut with perimeter angle screwed to the sides, suspended from 12mm studding instead of wire, bolted to the walls with anchorbolts and tied together down the length of the room with slotted channel to form what I thought was best described as like a 'massive steel potato waffle'. The x-ray machine (which weighs a couple of tonnes) was then fixed to the suspended ceiling.

Unistrut is big boy's mechano!! I've built alsorts out of it, including a car port at home and currently have a very heavy duty shelving system in my garage made out of strut and tray!
