Well chaps I have it on fairly good authority that the date of release for the first ammendment to BS 7671 2008, will be June 2011 following an initial draft for proof reading.

From what I have been told, there will be a new Special Locatoin - Medical Locations, and a new section (444) covering surge protection. Also I believe there will be changes to the PIR regarding implementation and codings.

I was just thinking I haven't given any money to the IEE this year for their reasonably priced books.

Am glad this chance has arisen.....

more money to probably shell out!!

any ways i don't do medical and my customers will be talked out of surge protection!! what's wrong with plug in ones !!!

At least it's not the 18th as was once speculated.

The NICEIC are doing Tech Talks nationwide with the one of the topics being the 1st ammendment. Have any of you guys been at these talks as they started in September 2009.

Lets for a moment suspend all cynicism and imagine that the reason for ammendments is because someone in the IET/IEE has suddenly had a eurika moment and realised that without surge protection and inclusion of medical areas as special locations our world was a dark a dangerous place!

Lets also imagine that the reason these weren't included in the first place was that the draft was still in process when the publishing deadline was due so the 17th went into press without these new regs so that we could all sleep safe in our beds with the knowledge that we had undergone courses and tests to keep us up to date with installing and testing so that RCD's were protecting our world as we know it!!

It isn't about hoovering our pockets with new publications (including On-site guide etc), new courses or having an unhealthy influence over our working lives at all....is it?:confused::mad:

When it comes out you will be able to download the amendment from the IET website which is normally FREE

A smidgen more.....

* Section 710 – Medical locations
* Section 444 – Measures against electromagnetic influences
* Section 534 – Devices for protection against overvoltage (surge protection devices)
* Test Marshal System – Testing the fixed wiring of electrical installations

better find my discount card for whs then. money money money. i wonder how many books a gas fitter has to buy

I may just photocopy all my current books and guidance notes and sell them now while there still worth something in preparation for the new round of never ending spending

I was at a course a couple of weeks ago and the instructor said something similar about the release of the 1st amendment

As far as I am aware, amendments are available as a free download from the IET website, so no need to buy another book....

Probably true; but its so cathartic to moan (or is it just my grumpy old man syndrome?), however if the essence of a PIR is being changed, I wonder if we will have to sit 'refresher' 2391 courses.

I doubt it, as although the layout of the reports are changing, and the coding, inspection and testing can't change as it can only be done one way, which is the majority of the course content...

So not much talk of this test6 marshal system, any chance of some input on this, i just had a bit browse about and seen this
Test Marshal - Intelligent Test Port - easier, quicker and safer

is this what they are talking about or am i totally off the mark.

Oooh, no. Nothing like that.

Although my company's MD and the MD of this firm are quite pally, so we are trying to get that trialled at a few of our sites, but I don't think it will take off... It is a simple good idea though!

Cost per unit?

About 70 quid per circuit. There is a need to run a data cable in to each box too to control the relays. The control box goes at the end of line of each circuit, and does the cross connection of the line and CPC... It does the figure of eight on the rings too, which is pretty good. I think it's a couple of hundred quid for the control module point at each distribution board too, plus a few hundred quid for the unit that plugs into the point... It's a good idea, but all that is done are the tests, and I think too much reliance will be put on test measurements instead of inspection which will show the faults. It is a good system, and I have seen it trialled in their mock up installation. For existing installations I think it's a no go, but new installs (big commercial/industrial) I think it could be viable.

We're hopefully getting one of our sites to be a demo site for it soon in London, so we'll see what happens then....

Not followed the links but the posts seem to suggest that this is simply remotely monitored predictive maintenance techniques applied to fixed wiring installations old hat really for the predictive maintenance brigade, sorry!

Edit: Spelling! AGAIN!

I have a copy of the 17th Amd 1 and there are HUGE changes in it. The Schedule of inspection for a PIR, now called an electrical installation condition report, is 7 pages long.

All the pages or text that have changed are in Red text and the whole document is a sea of red!. There are 210 extra pages so we will be carrying our regs in a wheelbarrow! Why would it have a "Green" cover if it uses so much paper?

Is this the one you have?:)

The Amendment has not yet been published. That was simply the Draft for Public Comment and is not British Standard 7671 (IEE Wiring Regulations / Requirements for Electrical Installations).
