A recurring problem I've found with halogen mains voltage down-lighters is that if 1 bulb blows it tends to take the whole circuit down and trip the MCB. There must be a millisecond of overcurrent sensed when the bulb decides to go 'belly up' trips the circuit. Would I be right in thinking that a C curve breaker would discriminate against this nuisance tripping?

That's not what type C breakers are meant for.
Soldering a bit of wire directly to the busbar in place of the protective device would "discriminate against this nuisance tripping" but that's not to say you should do it.

agree with novus , whats happening is the MCB is detecting a fault , the fault being the lamp going , what happens is the resistance of the filament is reduced and eventually gets to a short circuit hence the MCB trips common with all filament lamps , if the installation is wired in 1.5mm you could increase the size of the MCB to 10 amps that may cure the problem
