Just done my Exam and curious on one of the questions i got and the answer that would follow it.

State the 3 basic principles of fault diagnosis.

Or it was some thing similar.

I answered with
Gather the information
Analyse the Information
Rectify the fault

Is this correct or did i just flop the question ?

It would seem that you got the question mostly, if not completely, right
To quote from "Advanced Electrical Installation Work" -by Trevor Linsley:

Before an electrician can begin to diagnose the cause of a fault he must:

1. Have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the electrical installation or electrical equipment;

2. Collect information about the fault and the events occurring at or about the time of the fault from the people who were in the area at the time;

3. Begin to predict the probable cause of the fault using his own and other peoples skills and expertise;

4. Test some of the predictions using a logical approach to identify the cause of the fault.
