Hey there chaps,

Got a big cable basket install coming up, first time worked with the stuff when spanning such a distance. Looking for some useful hints and tips. Scenario is as follows:

  • transporting 25mm/4core SWA across three adjacent warehouses. decided not cleat it as i feel managing 50 meters of SWA 25 feet in the air balancing on a ladder while drilling and plugging for the cleat screws could be somewhat tricky. i do have a man cage but chances are i will be doing this install in on my own
  • suspending the basket with jack chain from the roofing girders. originally was going to catenary wire but i think jack chain would be far quicker? Am i wrong here.
  • Cable will be brought vertically upward to the tray, i am concerned that i wont be able to get a narrow enough bend in the cable to avoid any dragging on the edge of the tray putting heavy strain on the edges. if that makes sense. allow me to draw...........

Just after some useful suggestions from those of you who do any regular basket/tray installs.

Cheers fellas,

Alas it is Friday, i trust the beer shall be flowing in unreasonable and irresponsible proportions tonight?!

Hi wade88

Get a piece of aluminum sheet or mild steel, cut it to size of the tray, bend it over the edge so you get protection enough to prevent any damage whilst pulling the cable over the edge.

Trouble is, as you decided to suspend the tray with chain, the whole thing might be a bit unstBle, and, as you mentioned, you will be on your own.

Studs would be far better but it is very time consuming.

Naturally!

Form a bend at the end of tray.

2 man job in reality chain , gripple great for hanging but as already stated not very stable Youll need to put a bend on the tray to prevent scuffing when pullin in and support the drop

i'd go one further. extend the tray at 45deg. with a length of tray approx. 40ft. ( leave the last bit of tray off and use it for this) that reaches to the floor. anchor this to the floor, then pull cable up from there till the cable reaches it's destination, then remove the ramp tray and install it for the last 40ft. or so. then bung the last bit of cable onto it.

Apart from the sensible points others have posted regarding the hanging and installation of your basket/tray installation...
Do not attempt to install this cable on your own. Apart from the very real safety angle of things, you will undoubtedly damage the cable sheath in the process. Remember, even with stud supporting your containment system it will still sway about a fair bit during your cable installation....

The wholesales places have bends and elbows for the basket that you will be using, I would recommend using 10mm screwed Rod and not chains as this would end up in possible injury for yourself with the weight you will be dealing with, you should also get some of the basket joining segments instead of dealing with those little galvanised spring clips, those will just ping off.....the side clips with the fitting lever tool will just do the same...
maybe you could put a unistrut ladder up the wall and put Tray or basket up to the bend then fasten the basket run onto that, which will make it even more solid...

Screwed Rod and G Clamps are the best way, with Uni strut supports, make sure you go into screwfix and get a load of cable ties/tiewraps....anything that you want to use cleat on (Bowband) I would just use Standoff Saddles and line them all up, screw them down then zip the cable up one clip at a time in sequence in a good straight line...

Thanks lads - I have managed to drag my brother in for a few days to help, so that resolves that issue.

I installed an extensive compressed air ring earlier this year that i suspended from the ceiling with threaded rod and girder clips and although it took me a fair while, was a pretty handy way of doing it, not only for good solid support, but was pretty straight forward to get the whole thing level.

Will certainly look into the above suggestions. Beers are on me.....however i am a little put out no one has complimented my superb graphical abilities...... im hurt and frankly quite upset

Pull the armoured thru to where you want, pull it up in the air above where the tray is going with cheap BT rope, assemble tray and then lower armoured on the tray and clip, this will save having to pull it over the tray at 25 ft up

This is exactly what i planned to do Jax as i was going solo originally, even though i have conscripted some muscle, i think this will still be the plan.
