Cable Sizing

Hi There,

Can anyone assist with a cable sizing for 250 Kw (across 3phase) and neutral from a wind turbine to farmyard to supply chicken houses etc. Cabe length 2185 Mts buried direct SWA

Can you confirm your figures here please.

Is 250kw correct for a chicken housing set up?
What voltages are we talking over that distance?
When you say across the phases does that mean shared or per phase?

Please show your own calc's first, as a forum we are happy to help and guide but we stop short of designing the install for you, so we need to see your input as well.

I was just thinking that, thats a hell of a distance! I don't think the drum of cable will fit in the back of his van... LOL.

maybe it will, if he uses multiple strands of bell wire..... Good idea, eh.....

I'm not even entirely sure there is such a beast that will carry that power over that distance!! Transformers either end maybe???

It may be worth exploring the possibilty of transforming up to say 800V or maybe 1000V for the run then dropping it down again at the other end. You'll get away with smaller cables and can cheat the volt drop a touch with the transformers & tappings.
You'll be looking at a few cables in parallel too I would have thought

I'd go with dave on this, need to look into stepping it up then back down, also the turbine output voltage may be tappable saving a TX although not my field tbh, I would personally be drafting in the help of a design engineer knowledged in this field... any minor mis-calcs could be very costly.
