I'm I just having some bad luck, or is it not unusual on older installations to have cables shorted to the sharp edges on the old fashioned metal capping? This will often go undetected eg: neutral to earth short, but when you ugrade to a RCD, it will find it every time.

Then you get "Well it was OK before so what's the problem now & I hope it doesn't cost any more to find & fix it?"
