I had I call from a landlord wanting me to do a survey on a 2 bed flat, that he needed to send to EDF energy. I quoted him ÂŁ200. he said his cheapest quote was ÂŁ100.
Was my quote a bit high? or was he trying to get me to lower my price.

don't know where you are in the country, but in my area i make ÂŁ100 on a two beds ÂŁ120 on three beds and from then on it is all about the size of the house.... i had to charge one customer ÂŁ340 as he had 17 circuits in a four bed det. (it was massive and i ached for days after running up and down all those ruddy stairs!) but it also depends how organized you are. i've got a good routine now and a two bed normally takes about 4 hours to complete.

i would say you are a little high about ÂŁ150 is fair to you and your client, unless it's a pig. ÂŁ100 is too cheap. is the guy quoting that doing it thoroughly? at ÂŁ200, i would expect to put a couple of deviations right included

A good way I use to sell PIRs was

1. As Telectrix says your slighly higher becasue you will do small remedial work that is needed done. If a socket is cracked you will replace it, if something is looses ie a surface box your fix it things like that. Though of course if you find something major you will requote.

2. If you find faults or upgrades needed then you can sell yourself as you will deduct the cost of the PIR from the quote on new work. So for instance whatever you charge for a CU change you will deduct that 200 pounds or a percentage of it from the final cost. Ask then if that 100 pounds PIR offer the same service.

At the end of the day it's about selling yourself and the sercive your providing, and showing your honest. Some will still opt for the cheepy but you may be suprised how many will accept your quote.

Absolutely spot on.......Salesmanship is what gets you through the door initially, a job well done for a fair price is what gerts you back and verbal recomendations (the best advertising you cant buy). You have to up sell your skills but without knocking down competitors (customers hate competition bashing as a means to justify your own worth)

Im doing a full PIR on a bungalow inc storage heaters for ÂŁ175 with another ÂŁ29 for some PAT testing. She had a quote ÂŁ99 from elsewhere and the guy said he needed access for about an hour, when I said I'd be most of the dsay, she booked me there and then. End of the line customers aint fools and know they get what they pay for, its the cheap Landlords and uncaring estate agents that pinch on price at any cost.

I had a call landlady said she needed pir for 4 flats,i said roughly ÂŁ40 each(4 circuits per flat),it was a house converstion, builders and sparks done a runner, dont know why,i spoke to her a month later and she said someone was gonna do 4 flats for ÂŁ40!!!!!!!!!!jokers might as well write the circuit details on toilet paper if someone is doing it for that.

In general i would think it was very important to establish exactly what the client wants and what limitations there will be before you quote. No point quoting for full testing if all they really want is mostly visual with minimal testing and vice versa. Also not a lot of point charging for a full pir if they are desperate for a pass cert and a couple of sensible questions tells you that it will requires improvement (unless of course you are offering something like Malcolm has said above) your honesty might lose some money on that job but gain you more in the long run.

There's no way I would of even entertained them at ÂŁ40 each.

Be more like 140 pound each flat if the IET decide to go ahead with the "Electrical Installation Condition Report" and the "Inspection Schedule for Distribution Boards" and the "Schedule of Results".

As they stand we'll all need to employ secretaries, or get the apprentice in a mini skirt!!
