Hello,

I have tried to get onto a course (C&G 2330) to start to train as an Electrician, I used to work as an Electricians Mate for a couple of years but the job ended and I relocated and now am not working in this field but I want to train.

The Colleague said I will not be able to do this course unless I get a job as a Mate again but I am not sure I can afford to (I am 30 and have rent and so on to pay!) So has anyone got any advice?

In an ideal world… I would like to start something in while working in my totally unrelated job (sales) and towards the end of my course then get a job as I think then I could offer something more to an employer (and might get paid slightly more! Maybe..)

Has anyone got any experience doing this? Even if it is possible, are people who qualify while not working within the trade (like on the adverts you see on TV from skill centre) are they employable?

Thanks

ello m8 i am doing just this now through train for trade skills the course is funnded and then you have to repay the loan interest fre ovr a set time .........however the only pit fall as far as i can see is that because the course is all theory based save for the od wek practical traing ..once qualified because youll be qualified but with no actuall time served your limited re employment optons and thus self employment is going to be maybe the best option although my intention is to work for peanuts for a cple of years ......as u say u are 30 yrs old i my self am 35 curently on the dole and struggling like **** but i hold the belief that its gonna be worth it in the long run ( i ****in hope so anyway).....

so it is possible its just a mtter of how badly do u want it ? hope this helps

yes it is possible m8 in doing just this now thru train for trade skils......its funded although u have to pay it back in monthly installments. the course tho is geared up to you becomming self employed since you wont upon qualification have any time served experience limiting your employment options ....unless your prepared to work for minimum wage por a cple of years while u get said experience under your belt .......( which is my intention)

im 35 and currently doing this course whilst on the dole so im struggling like **** ...but i guess its just a case of how badly u want it ...... hope this helps

most of the lads on my course said they worked for themselves in related trades, kitchen fitter, loft converter etc. if they ask for proof just write a letter explaining you dont have an employer as you work for yourself. worked for all that were asked at my college ;)

Thanks for all thats guys,

I did start a course when I was working on some contracts a few months back, they did ask for some pics of me in a hard hat working and so on, nothing I cant do at home with a wall socket hey!

I guess if they need anything more, I could try and ask around to see if I can do a bit of work for free/low rate now and again, they get help, I get something they can come out and check over (they do come out right?)

So, they will be ok if I say im self employed? thats a good idea. the course starts in September so that would be alright.

Cheers wurm, ill give skills centre a call then, how long is the course?

What do you guys think of this?

I have some experiance so I think that one is ok, will that be all I need do you think? I do know then I will need some more experiance but I think that will be so much easier to get after i have a ticket!

Feedback would be great...

Cheers
