Hey,

just a quick on, i want to run a length of cat5 on the outside wall of my house, it will get wet and not much but slight sunlight.

Would this last about a year??

Thanks
Ashley

yeh i have wired all my outside sockets in it. :D kidding, i have seen loads on train station`s tie wrapped for the cctv, seen loads in night clubs clipped to the wall outside too

I was working at a school installing a cctv system,The data guys were on site renewing part of the schools network, they ran all there cable's on top of the roof and dropped down to every class external.I asked why they would do that ,no budget for containment internal
so if they can do that with 500 cables im sure one wouldn't hert

It will last a year no problems. I did the same when my little boy wanted his Xbox live in is room so ran a cat5 from the front of the house over the roof to his room. It was only supposed to be a temporary measure but has been there 10 months with no problems yet. If you want something more permanant could you not put it in conduit???

Just make sure it is well sealed at point of entry to the building or you will end up with water where it is not welcome. I got water down my telly aerial cable many moons ago, the telly was not impressed.

Thanks you all for advice given.

Sounds like I will be running it outside then.

I was going to ask college tutors but get more sense from you guys, thanks once again.

At college doing 2330 Level 2 (Final Exam on Friday), PAT testing course level 3 (Done), 17th Regs (Wednesday), and Level 3 2330 start in September.
Lol just encase you were wondering of course.

Ashley

Good luck with all of the exams Ashley. Stick with the forums here, there's ALWAYS items not in the Regs/books and referring stuff here is always useful. You'll get practical advice!

Incidentally, I've run tons of Cat5 and can't think of a reason not to run it outside as long as the conditions are OK.

Bit late but here goes , as said will defo last a year ,(done it myself as a temp measure ) but why not get exterior grade cat5 near as damit same money . P.s just because lots of people put it outside and getaway with it doesn't make it right

Yes, you run each socket as a point to point connection, and use a switch (it doesn't need to be PoE unless you are wanting to power devices via...
