Can you identify this please?

Almost at ceiling height in a house a friend has just purchased. I think it's an ancient electric clock fitting. Is it possible to remove this simply, replace with up to date fitting, or blank it off?

If you can get a new clock connector it comes with a plug anyway

You don't see these fused clock connectors much these days because mains powered wall clocks, are now very few and far between. They all tend to be battery powered, with the batteries often lasting well over a year.

I fitted one a couple of years ago for a picture light. Makes for a nice low-profile connection, and easy to unplug if required.
