Hi I am installing a supply to feed plug in points for static caravans. The points have a RCD built in to protect the supply to the caravan but I am unsure if the buried SWA feeding the plug in points requires to be RCD protected. I am clear on what else is required for the supply i.e. earth rod if its a TNCS system but if anyone has any tips on what I should be aware of it will be appreciated. Thanks Steve

Have a look at this short article in the IET Wiring Matters magazine... http://electrical.------.org/wiring-matters/40/earthing.cfm?type=pdf

Yeah i hear what your saying and your are probably right steve in relalation to caravans, its just there has always been a conflicts of views on here as to whether you need to rod a tncs system.

he's not rodding the tnc-s. he's fitting a separate TT for the pitches. not taking the tnc-s to them. oh, and the swa does not require rcd protection per se.

The SWA feeding the pitches may or may not need RCD'ing depending on your configuration for the TT system. (i.e at the pitch themselves or at the 'main' area). If it does need RCD'ing then clearly a time delayed RCD will be need to discriminate with the pitch socket RCD's.

GN8 is worth a read and explains this better and more fuller!

You can TNCS the armoured supply to the pitch Isolating unit, then drop off the earth in the back of the isolator, whack an earth rod in at the pitch end and connect the earth to the isolating unit/meter or whatever is fitted at the pitch end. when the static then gets connected to this unit it is connected to a TT system, the armoured feeding the static supply however which is buried underground is still TNCS and protected accordingly. obviously the armoured needs to be buried properly and to regs regarding depths. This is assuming the rcd unit is at the static end of course and not somewhere else.

IN,Australia, everything has to be double pole AFCI/RCD combos from 016,plus outlets, switches must be double pole,.4mm power 2.5mm,lights purely for vibration reasons, for internal wiring I use MC cable from Southwire in America, they will make TPS called romex any colour, once wired a house for two nice old lezzos, exposed tps, coloured pink, pink everything.

if the DB board feeding the hook up boxes at the statics has been TT'd they may need to be RCD protected, if the circuits don't meet there max permitted earth loops for that circuit! you could feed the static boxes with tncs, but then install a rod at each static box, but you need to make sure there is no inter-connection between the earths and there is a label clearly stating that there is a duel earthing system within the enclosure.

Apart from what Tel and MDJ has stated regarding the distribution of TNC-S/PME supply to pitch points....

Yes, ...if you're looping the SWA supply cable from one static caravan pitch point to the next, pull in a separate 10mm earthing conductor to connect the earth rods from each pitch. At the very least you will then stand a decent chance of attaining good Ra values. ...And please don't use those 3/8'' short twiggs, always 2 X 5/8'' rods as a minimum for decent Ra values and rod stability...
