Hi,

My mates caravan rcd keeps tripping.

Is this a overload or do you think it could be a fault.

They say it trips when lots of things are on so would it be poss to upgrade the rcd ?

Overloads and Short Circuits are dealt with by MCBs

A leakage to earth is dealt with by an RCD

Upgrading wont help you need to switch things on one by one to find which is causing the tripping it may just be the leakage to earth of all circuits exceeds the RCD

Hope that helps

Chris

Ok I will call you daft if you insist:) No not really an RCD will trip out if you have a leakage to earth or an imbalance between live and neutral this can be caused by the circuit itself or for example a toaster or cooker.

So what you need to do is switch each appliance on then off move on to the next one and keep doing that until the RCD trips the appliance you just turned on is faulty.

Chris

Inbalance between live and N ?

Me knows he tapped a N off a light fitting for some spot lights he put in a year back but they are fed from the same supply switch

Whould this be it ?

I would have thought for the lights to work he would have tapped of L N and earth they would not work on N only.

How long has he had everything on and when did the fault develop

Chris

He has done as you said etc.

He also tells me it happens now and again but has always gone on over the past 4 years.

Last time it went he said he had all the lights on and other things too etc.

So i think it could be a faulty appliance as you say.

Not his spots

?

Almost certainly thats at fault the old style are number one favourites for that so disconnect the strip light and switch everything on odds on nothing will trip the RCD.

Good luck

In a lot of caravans the strip lights are 12v not 230v. Touring caravans have very little or no 230v lighting
