Good evening and Happy New Year!

I am 40 years of age with the risk of redundancy hanging around my neck (sorry i realise there are lots of people in this position). I have no trade that I can fall back on but have chose to train as an electrician. I have started the C&G 2330 (and am rather enjoying it).

My question is, and i realise it may take a long time and cost me money, what other qualifications will i need to work for myself in Domestic Installation? if appropriately qualified, would i be able to work for myself?

I am completely new to this so I would be gratefull for any advice that could steer me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Nigel.

Your biggest hinderance will be your lack of experience. You can either attend a college for 3 years and complete a C&G course. This would be how I would approach it. Otherwise, you can approach a private training company, who will releive you of you ÂŁ6000 in exchange for a peice of paper!!

Do you know anyone who is in the trade who you could possibly work with now and again to get a bit of experience? as this is what you really need. You could try contacting contractors in your area and ask if they could do with a pair of hands.

Best of luck

Edit: Sorry just seen that your already on a course

Lenny/Richard,

Thanks for the reply's, Lenny I will look through the link and come back to you if you don't mind as i am a little confused about whether or not i will be able to sign off my own work???

Richard, what i thought of doing is once i have the C&G 2330 under my belt, whilst i am still working (hopefully), offer my time to a company FOC on a weekend basis. Do you think firms will take me up on the offer or do you think i would need something more full time?

Thanks once again gents.

Nigel

To be fair everyone's circumstance is different! The Ideal IMO would be to work formally with a firm for a couple of years and get the experience you need that way... however you've got to play the cards your dealt really and make sure your able to make the most of any opportunity that arises. Stick around this forum as its a very valuable tool!

I was lucky enough to find work in the trade whilst training and it was so much help, especially with regards to understanding why things are done in a particular way.

I completed my course in 18 months at a pace that I was comfortable with and as mentioned working in the trade at the same time. I set up my business in September 2011 and I am now Part P registered. This career change was the best thing I have ever done but I will admit that I have had a little luck on my side, without the practical assistance I acquired along the way I may have been in a completely different position as there is very little help out there being offered by sparks as you will be potentially becoming ANOTHER competitor in a trade where prices are being battered down in an economic climate where people just don't want to open their wallets.

Good Luck

Wow, If your game, I am? Sorry don't mean to put you in a corner pal. if you fancy a weekend labourer FOC in exchange for experience, then I'm your man. Otherwise I am most gratefull for your advice.

Feel free to send me a PM me with your details so that you can see if the distance is doable for you:thumbsup

I am waiting for a date to be confirmed for a rewire that is supposed to commence in the early weeks of this month :)
