Sorry if i posted this wrong area but not sure where to post ,

Looking for advice on running cat 5e ( non shielded ) in relation with standard t + e,

Am on a new large contract for hotels and all rooms need cat 5e cable ,...

Now i aint ever run this , just been to do so, ...now how far away from t+e is reccomended to avoid interference ? .. if it deos have an effect how bad is it ? ....is it just better to buy cat 5e sheilded cable ?

Thanks.....ONCE AGAIN ! ALL YOU VERY HELPFUL PROS OUT THERE ~!

:-D:seeya::single ****:

I only use screened for all cat5 jobs unless it was going into its own containment or trunking its not worth the risk of problems later, especially if its going to be run with power cables. I remember years ago being told on an MK data course, it could run at right angles and only together for no more than two metres but like most of the things you hear like this it means jack when you have a problem.
Separation means separation. I know it costs more for screened but it will cost alot more if it spikes the network.

will def be reccomending screened cable instead, But just out out curiosity , if 'seperation', is to be achieved , how far in reality should the cables be away from power cables ?

Thanks

I normally try to separate a safe route for comms possible on tray, trunking etc, I would have thought if it was a Hotel you would be working from drawings that normally design the method to use unless you are doing the designing also. It must be segregated is possibly the term i should have used but must be far enough away not to be affected by other voltage present. a separate containment is the best way forward but not always possible I know.

I don't know where it came from but if using unscreened cable I would keep it at least 6" from mains when running parallel but I am not sure if this is adequate over long runs. As it is twisted pair there should be cancellation of induced voltages but it is better if they are not induced in the first place.

yeah thats true, containment is prob best ,

Trouble is that we only have two routes in which to run lighting, rings, and radials, within each room due to the chippys needing to stud the ceiling.

Were on a very tight schedule and they would NOT be happy if i spend hours rerouting cables tomo,

I will be recomending screened but doubt it will be sorted / bought by tomo.

hmmmmm.....

lol

Shielded is more expensive, and is usually only required where there is a source of heavy EMF being generated, like air con/lift motors, etc. It is the transients that cause the problem but if 230v and for some distance then stay a min of 200mm away you are OK. 150mm if in a cable tray or similar part metallic conduit. Fluorescent lights, even CFL can be a bit noisey, I think it is 120/130mm.

I think if the runs are only a few meters then segregation is not a problem, get them as far apart as possible in the conduit.

Cat 5e UTP is fairly resilliant to noise anyway. The biggest problem with running parallel to high juice mains cables is if they overload suddenly, big EMF spike on the up and the down too. Interference under normal situations in typically not a concern, unless mission critical devices are in danger of being affected. Keep the seperation distance and unshielded is usually OK.

If you use shielded, you can go down to 50mm, but you must use metallic connectors, usually at one end only to prevent ground loops, and that end must be suitable for grounding. Some patch panels / devices are not. Other wise if you use plastic ends you may as well not bother with shielded.

Thanks all for your input :)

Convinced the main contractor to buy screened after, will be arriving tomo, put draw lines in prep for it.

CRAZYSCOZZESE : cheers fella ur a star for writing such a descriptive reply. Think we got a guy coming in to wire up to the patch panel etc, so can leave him to worry about tha, he'll know more baout it ( hopefully) ...lol
