I'm going to be installing some cctv at home, never done it before so has anybody got any advice as to the best methods?

I've installed the older version of these for a few clients. Wireless IP Home Security Cameras - Wi-Fi Network Cameras | Y-cam Solutions Don't bother with the wireless use ethernet cables or power-line adaptors.
You can set it up to email you when motion is detected or view remotely on a pc or smart phone.

DISCLAIMER I do not work for y-cam just have happy clients using them.

for home installation you can't beat a kit from maplins or cpc. it's plug and play. a doddle to fit

I was hoping to do it properly, (a hard wired install) as practice because we have had to turn 3 CCTV jobs down this past week simply because i have never done 1 before. I'd rather practice and cock up on my own house than on a customers house.

CCTV hard wired is simple. a coax for the signal and a pair for the power. you may need a bit of practice making off the BNC plugs. don't even think about the screw-in ones, they're cack. you can use siamese cable which is coax and a pair stuck together. Volt drop is only usually a problem if you have very long runs. most cctv cameras use a 12V dc supply but some use 24V ac or 240V ac. ( generally the more industrialised systems )

Thanks a lot, i will have a look into that cable, and practice on the plugs :)
