I have a customer who requires a basic CCTV installation on a block of flats one camera on the front entrance door and one at the rear of the building with the recording on some sort of a loop say 24 hour.
Their is already security lighting around the building the landlords supply is a BS 3036 rewireable fused board I want to change the board but i am sure their is a budget for the job under the maintenance contract with the residents. Can anyone advise me of the most cost effective solution.

Hi

CCTV is not difficult, as long as the operational requirement is known, this includeds such information as feilds of view, recording duration, day/night operation, who will review the footage, where will it be displayed etc etc.

The kit in basic terms:

CCTV camera, either dome or camera within housing (vandal resisting might be a good option)
Lens (dome cameras have pre fitted ones)
Video signal back to recorder, either RG59 coaxial cable or using a Balun, over twisted pair (BT/Cat 5 cable)
Power, either mains or 24v, 24v would be a good option as the least equipment or oppertunity of damage at the entrances the better.
Monitor, to review the footage
Digital Video Recorders , don't just go on price, record an image and then play it back to check quality

Check out the ICO link to find details on how to register the scheme adn appropriate signage etc.

If the images are for evidence in the event of a crime, include an evidence compliance kit within the pricing.

Could go on for ever on what seems a simple job :)

Depending on the length of run, my first choice would be to install a 24vAC power supply to feed the two cameras, if the kit is going in the metering area you will need 3 outlets (monitor, DVR & PSU) the current draw is minimal and could easily be fed from the socket oulet next to the CU

Hi

That would make things a lot easier and cheaper and the unit will need to go in the cupboard and their probably isn't much space is their a recording unit without a monitor where if their is a problem with vandalism etc and the images are required then a tape/disc can be removed and played on a computer

Your best solution would be the following -

Use shotgun coax (coax and 1 x power pair) ÂŁ25 100M

2 x Vandal proof day / night cameras with built in infa-red. 12v dc. normal lens are about 3.8mm or you can get vari-focal so you can optimise the viewing area needed. Get a camera with a minimum of 480 TVL. ÂŁ50 - ÂŁ90 each

1 x DVR something like a AVTECH would do fine, if you only need to store images for 24 hrs then a 160GB drive would do, some come with a 250Gb as standard. You can back any footage up to a USB stick. A frame rate of 12.5 per second would be more than enough. Resolution half D1. ÂŁ125 - ÂŁ200

1 x 12V dc supply (5 amp incase he wants more cameras about ÂŁ20 quid)

1 x Lcd monitor Vga and appropiate signage for outside. ÂŁ140

2 x External boxes and BNC connectors ÂŁ10
