Hi
not sure if I have posted this in the correct section.
I have just bought a ceiling fan which has one light at the bottom but the problem I have is that when I had taken the old light fitting down I forgot to check which cable was for what. Now I have 2 grey cables that come down through the ceiling and both grey cables have one blue and one brown cable coming from each they also both have earth cables running through them.
What I need to know is which cable goes where. On the fan there is connectors for live, neutral and earth.
Hope you all can understand I could also add pictures if it would help.
Thanks in advance

what you have is a L/N feed and a switch wire. the blue of the switch wire should have a brown sleeve over. if not you need to identify it using a ohm meter or multimeter set on ohms. WITH THE SUPPLY OFF.. first, do you have access to a meter?

Ok I have borrowed a meter from a friend and now know which blue cable is the live switch wire. Now I need to know where to put all the wires the fan has the connections live, neutral and earth.

From the info supplied, the 2 browns join together, that supplies the "live" to the switch, the blue from the switch connects to the live on the fan, the other blue connects to the neutral. The earths obviously go to the terminal marked earth! Is there a spare terminal in the fan? This is what should be used for joining the browns together. Check all connections are tight and movement resistant, ie wont come loose as you fit the fan to the ceiling. the switch blue should be marked with either a brown sleeve or tape or an "L" to indicate that is a line conductor. Hope this helps
