What is the best way to find the ceiling joists when installing lights?

i put small hole then bent coat hanger, once you found first the rest should be standard dist apart

Once u lift the boards to disconnect centre light u can then measure joist using the hole from the light as a referance point.

A good way to find a starting place is just knock on the ceiling with your knuckles. You will hear a dull thud where there is a joist, and a more resonant sound where there's a gap. This method is not 100% though! You could try a stud finder, but I've never used one that worked that well.
