Hi, how much would you guys charge to change a central heating control panel from the old clockwork timer one to a digital one?

Hi.

Probably looking at £50 - £60 squids for a decent double channel 7 day timeclock and providing it's a relatively straight forward swap £40 odd labour, Round about £100 I suppose.

I've not done one before i normally get a mate whose a plumber to do them but work is a bit thin on the ground at the minute, it does look a fairly straight forward swap, cheers Lenny

agree with lenny, about £40 labour + new control, and you may find that the back plates were standardised years ago, i've yet to find one that won't fit on the old backplate. although you should still change the backplate, it's just a case of copying what is already there.

Did one last week charged £40 for labour. Swap the back over then its live and neutral at the start of the plate then the other two wires are one in number 3 and the other in number 4. Usually a like for like swap you hope.

Just installed the control panel, all working fine on heating and water BUT:rolleyes: on the boiler, a Glow worm if that makes a difference, there was permenent live, neutral and earth, a switched live and another wire that goes live when the boiler fires up:confused:, it was connected to a yellow wire in the terminal block on front of the boiler and on the old sunvic controls that came out i should have but did'nt take note of where it was connected there, everything seems to work as it should so i have no clue as to what it does, and it does'nt mention in the installation instructions that its needed but it obviously does something, any ideas?

Would it be that the old sunvic needed it to power something and the new one does'nt?

it's possible that the extra wire was for a thermostat on the hot water cylinder/tank . some of the old systems relied purely on a thermostat inside the boiler, unlike more modern systems which have both. but as you say if it's all working fine then no problem.:)

Hi monkeyelectric
I've been asked to change a control panel for a central heating system. Just out of interest what testing did you do after you changed the panel?

I have been taught to test the whole circuit back to the board and issue a minor works which would mean isolating the pump, 3way valve, neon in the switched spur and stats to protect them from the IR test?

Obviously this would increase the time it takes to do the job (and the price)

Hi, i insulation tested the cables, with items removed but did'nt do back to the consumer as it was on a plug with 3 amp fuse so i left the isolation means like that, i charged £110 total, took me a bout 2 hours and the control panel and wiring centre was £50 so it was'nt a bad profit and i'm on the estate agents list as an approved electrician now so more work to follow:D
